After the scientists at a biotechnology company discover a device or method that can allay or diagnose the symptoms associated with a particular disease, then the same company must rely on its various production technologies. It must have in place the manufacturing systems that will allow it to fill many orders for such an item. Sometimes, it counts on the Process Development Department to develop a suitable manufacturing technology.

It might, for example, need to culture cells in bulk, so that a certain protein can be made inside of the growing cells. It might also need to use a special type of medium. The scientists in the Process Development Department would be called on to tackle the task of growing tissues under the conditions that should allow them make the desired product.

In the case where a new type of medium must be used, a scientific team can face a great challenge. Not only does a tissue have to remain viable while in the new media, it must also serve as a sample of organic matter, one that can be frozen and recovered. Researchers might freeze a tissue sample that later is found to be of great importance. At that point, it must be thawed and used in the existing production technology.

At the same time, it becomes useful to scale down the size of the needed equipment. Technological advances are beginning to let researchers grow living material in a small chamber. Such advances will make it possible for a plant to fill a larger number of orders without expanding into a greater amount of space.

All such changes and adaptations must take place with the understanding that any one of them could be temporary. At any point, an investigative team could unearth evidence that a new approach should be tried. At any time, an article in a journal could cause the scientists in the Research and Development Departments to call for a new line of attack on any given problem. The same men and women could even want to pursue the solution to a new problem. That desire might lead to the employment of even more advanced techniques.
